The Future is Now
Preparing the Automotive Service and Repair Industry for EVs
According to the latest statistics, there are now over 54,000 electric vehicles registered in B.C., and this number is anticipated to grow exponentially in the coming years. EVs now make up 9% of all new car sales in the province, and the government expects to exceed its 2025 sales targets.
It is anticipated that by 2030, over 30% of all new car sales will be electric, and by 2040, that number will reach 100%. This means that over 50% of all vehicles on the road will be fully electric. In fact, in many urban areas the ratio will likely be even higher.
EVs are not a fad; battery technology is evolving and cars are becoming smarter and more efficient to operate.
This poses some unique challenges to an industry that has been operating in a gasoline-powered world for more than 100 years. However, the industry has repeatedly demonstrated its ability to adapt to change over the years, and will continue to do so long as there are entrepreneurs willing to make the investment.
So, at what point will you be prepared to make the investment in equipment, training, and certification?
You may be looking at the current number of electric vehicles on the road and thinking now is not the time, or you want to wait to see how things unfold. However, waiting is not the wisest strategy. The early adopters are always the first to reap the benefits.
There are many risks associated with a wait and see approach. Turning away customers is not sustainable, and by the time you decide to get into this market, it may be too late.
Further, there are safety and liability risks associated with servicing and repairing EVs, and you will need to invest in the proper training for your employees and the proper equipment for your business.
Consider certifying your business as EVfriendly. The EVfriendly program is designed to help businesses transition into servicing electric vehicles. EVfriendly certification lets consumers and others know that you and your employees are qualified professionals, and the program offers training and support to help you grow your business.
