Protocols for Recycling Facilities &
Longer-Term Storage Sites Recycling facilities and longer-term storage sites must adopt stringent
protocols to safely manage damaged EVs as they progress from intake
to dismantling or extended storage. These protocols should focus on
documentation, proper isolation, and adherence to safety measures. NEXT Long-term facilities should adhere to the following guidance measures: Protocols for Recycling Facilities &
Longer-Term Storage Sites • Verify the Vehicle’s Condition: • Gather Critical Information: • Communicate with the tow operator to gather incident details, including: • The nature of the damage. • Any hidden risks, such as internal battery leaks or compromised wiring. • Collect any documentation provided by the vehicle owner, seller, or towing company. • Record All Details in the Inventory: • Log the vehicle in the facility’s inventory system as a “HIGH-VOLTAGE” vehicle. Vehicle Intake and Documentation • Use VIN decoding and other resources to confirm the vehicle’s make, model,
and high-voltage system specifications. • Assess any visible damage, signs of battery distress, or indicators of residual energy. • Include all relevant safety considerations, such as isolation protocols, initial inspection
results, and risk assessment findings.
