The Decision to Stop or Delay a Recovery Operation

The decision to stop or delay a recovery operation in a no-go scenario usually falls to the site scene coordinator. This person oversees the operation, evaluates risks, and ensures that all actions follow safety rules, company policies, and best practices.  In smaller operations where a site scene soordinator isn’t present, the tow operator often takes on this responsibility. It’s their job to use good judgment and prioritize safety. While the final decision may rest with one individual, working together with emergency responders, subcontractors, and others on-site is critical. Decisions should be made openly and with input from experts familiar with the specific hazards.

Action Items to consider:

  • Create a no-go scenario checklist to quickly evaluate conditions that may warrant a full stop to the recovery operation.
  • Prepare a visual guide or flowchart of roles, responsibilities, and communication
  • Prepare a risk evaluation or risk assessment checklist
