EMS 2.4.3

Incident Response Protocols During Transport

When an incident involving a damaged EV occurs during transport, follow these protocols
to ensure safety and minimize risks:

Immediate Response to Fire or Thermal Runaway
• Pull over to a safe location immediately and call 911.
• Use full PPE to avoid exposure to toxic smoke and fumes.
Fire Suppression
• Apply approximately 2,500 gallons (10,000 liters) of water directly to the battery
to extinguish and cool the fire.
• Use Class D or lithium-ion-specific fire extinguishers for fires involving lithium-metal batteries.
• Monitor the battery’s temperature for at least one hour after cooling to detect potential reignition.
Containment and Transport Precautions
• Prepare alternative transport methods, such as using a bin or isolated container,
if thermal events persist.
• Maintain a 50-foot safety radius during transport and at the storage site
to minimize risks to other vehicles and structures.
Environmental and Hazardous Waste Considerations
• Secure hazardous waste materials for proper disposal, including residues from fire suppression efforts.
• Communicate with local environmental agencies to address potential contamination risks.
Action items to consider:
• Prepare a checklist for transport incidents, to include communication protocols and PPE requirements.
