EMS 2.2.3

Best Practices for Securing Damaged Vehicles

To safely secure damaged EVs for transport, follow these best practices:

• Use skids and soft straps instead of chains to minimize the risk of
further damage to high-voltage components.
• Ensure the vehicle is elevated so HV components and wiring do not come into contact
with the metal deck or equipment during loading.
• Utilize tarps, fire blankets, or other protective coverings
to contain potential hazards during transport.
• Follow proper loading procedures and take all necessary precautions to address
the possibility of thermal runaway during the loading phase.
Action items to consider:
• Develop educational materials, such as videos, demonstrating proper vehicle loading techniques
(e.g., "Loading a Vehicle onto a Flatbed").
• Ensure ongoing training for personnel on handling and transporting damaged EVs,
including protocols for using protective equipment and monitoring for thermal events.
