Protocols for Temporary Storage Facilities
Temporary storage facilities play a role in safely managing high-risk EVs during the initial
post-incident period. Proper protocols ensure that these facilities are prepared to handle
potential hazards associated with damaged EVs.
The following guidelines outline the steps for temporary storage:
Notify the Facility in Advance
• Prior to transporting a damaged EV to a storage facility, notify the
facility staff of the vehicle's imminent arrival. Provide key details such as:
• The nature of the incident and any known damage (fire, collision, flooding).
• Any immediate safety concerns, such as residual heat, leaks, or visible damage
to the high-voltage battery.
• The type of vehicle (hybrid or fully electric).
• Advance notice allows the facility to prepare appropriate isolation
areas and ensure the necessary personnel and equipment are available
upon arrival.
Ensure the Facility is Prepared to Handle EVs
• Temporary storage facilities must have undergone a comprehensive
risk assessment to evaluate their readiness to store and manage
damaged EVs. This includes:
• Fire suppression systems and secondary containment measures for hazardous
fluids or runoff.
• Clear protocols for monitoring stored vehicles for signs of instability, such as
overheating or leaks.
• Designated isolation zones that are well-ventilated and at least 50 feet from
other vehicles or structures.
• Personnel trained in EV-specific risks and handling procedures, equipped with
proper PPE and tools.
Have Contingency Plans for Accommodation Issues
• If the primary storage facility cannot accommodate the high-risk EV
immediately, alternatives must be arranged. These may include:
• Ensuring the secondary site has completed a facility risk assessment and is
equipped with proper isolation and containment measures.
• Communicating with the secondary site staff in advance to ensure they are
aware of the vehicle's arrival and any potential risks.
• Transporting the vehicle to a secondary or contracted storage site that meets
the same safety and preparedness standards.
Set Clear Unloading Protocols
• Prior to unloading the EV, confirm with the facility staff the
designated drop-off location and any special handling instructions.
• The vehicle should be unloaded directly into the designated isolation
area, minimizing unnecessary handling or movement.
• Place warning signs or placards on the vehicle to indicate it is
high-voltage and under inspection, ensuring that all personnel
are aware of its status.
Maintain Records and Documentation
• Record the vehicle's arrival, including the time, date,
and condition upon delivery.
• Document any initial safety measures taken, such as
thermal checks, isolation protocols, or containment efforts.
• Maintain communication logs with the towing operator, dispatch,
and facility staff to ensure a clear chain of information.
